Best Biopics of Bollywood in 2016
2016 has been a good year for biopics in Bollywood. Trend of making films based on real-life incidents and biographies has started in the early 2010s, and many of them have met with critic and commercial success. Definitely biopics of Indian cricketers remain in spotlight right now, especially the biopic of Indian skipper – M. S. Dhoni. Earlier I have posted one column on Best Biopics of Bollywood and Biopics which give National award to its lead actor. Through this article, I would like to mention a few successful biopics made in 2016.
Airlift – It was the first major biopic released in the year 2016, and was a huge blockbuster at box office. The movie starring Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur was based on Gulf-settled Indian businessman Mathunny Mathews who spearheaded the evacuation efforts during the infamous Gulfwar 1991. The script also included the rescue operations of two or three more heroes, and combined together to give the fictional character Ranjit Katyal onscreen.
Neerja – This biopic based on the real-life and rescue operations of Neerja Bhanot, air hostess of Pan Am Flight 73 who lost her life saving 359 of the 379 passengers and crew on board. Sonam Kapoor reprised the role of this brave girl, and it’s her best career performance up-to-date. It’s quite co-incidence first two blockbusters of 2016 are biopics, and both based on rescue operations. Neerja was released exactly 4 weeks after Airlift.
Sarbjit – Though Sarbjit was not a huge hit at box office, it met with critical and commercial success. In fact, it was one of the most awaited biopics of the year, and was premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Randeep Hooda played the titular role of Sarbjit who lost his life in Pakistani prison, despite his sister fought her best to get justice for her brother. Sister’s role was played by Aishwarya Rai, and the movie got much public attention and wide media attention since the movie was into making stage.
Rustom – The second biopic film of Akshay Kumar in the year 2016. Though the movie received negative response from critics, it received warm response from audience, and currently inching to reach 100-crore mark. If so, it would be the third film of Akshay to cross 100-crores in 2016. The movie is based on the real life incident of Naval Officer K.M. Nanavati and the infamous Nanavati case.
Flops of the year
Apart from the above mentioned movies, a few biopics/movies based on real-life were made in Bollywood which couldn’t make it big. Azhar starring Emraan Hashmi was based on the life of former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin. Sandeep Bharadwaj played the titular role in RGV’s Veerappan. The psychological thriller Raman Raghav 2.0 was loosely based on the life of the serial killer Raman Raghav who operated in Mumbai during the mid-1960s, and the film showed a modern version.
Upcoming flicks
A year of biopic sports dramas,M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is one of the most anticipated biopics of the year. Sushant Singh Rajput plays the role of Indian skipper, and the movie is directed by Neeraj Pandey. Sachin: A Billion Dreams is yet another biopic based on the life of an Indian cricketer, and this time the ‘God of Cricket’. The movie also marks the screen debut of the legendary Indian cricketer. There is one more strange twist for the movie. Sachin’s son Arjun Tendulkar plays the teenage version of Sachin.
Dangal featuring Aamir Khan is the big Christmas release of 2016. Aamir plays the role of Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trains his daughters Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat. It’s definitely one of the biggest releases of the year.
