When we talk about music of 1990s, Anu Malik’s name definitely find a place. Yes, Anu Malik played a magnificent role in shaping the music of 1990s. Either it’s sweet melody, fast party number or a romantic duet, Anu Malik has tried with every genres of Bollywood music. He is very often accused for those copied or ‘inspired’ tunes which he used to lift from western compositions. Yet we are obliged to him for giving some of the best compositions of Bollywood during 1990-2005, by giving a desi twist for inspired ones and making it popular among the masses.

I am sure, I can’t claim all his chartbuster songs featured here to be original. Yet it’s my sincere effort to bring out some of the best Bollywood music, which Anu Malik is credited to. Actually I love soft melodies of Anu Malik than his fast peppy numbers. Yet I tried to include some songs with fast beats too, to include the tastes of different people. As a kid of 1990s, many of his songs are nostalgic and form a part of my teens as well. Here is the selection of top 100 hit songs of Anu Malik. If you are an Anu Malik fan, or a lover of songs of 1990s and early 2000s, you will definitely love it. I have sorted the songs in the order of film’s year of release. In the end, I have provided some more chartbuster hits of Anu Malik for your playlist classified as 1990s or 2000s.

1. Chamakte Chand Ko from Awaargi (1990) – Anu Malik started his film journey in the year 1980s. Yet it took one decade for the composer to give some of the best compositions of his career. Songs of Sohni Mahiwal are nice, which gave him the very first nomination at Filmfare awards, so are a few compositions of Ek Chadar Maili Si, Aasman, Mujrim etc. Yet his career best songs were yet to happen. I bet you, Chamakte Chand Ko from Awaargi – the beautiful ghazal of Ghulam Ali is the best choice to ‘Aaghaaz’ this list of career best songs of Anu Malik. The song featuring Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri was penned by Anand Bakshi.

2. Is Pyar Se Meri Taraf Na Dekho from Chamatkar (1992) – Anu Malik gained his momentum in the early 1990s, and his compositions flowed with the swift of the sweet melodies of the era. Bollywood witnessed its worst era of movies and songs in the 1980s, and once again restored its position in the 1990s, and Anu Malik became a part of it, though the swift was to a new direction, in terms of filmmaking or song compositions or renditions. Almost all songs of the movie were super hits – Bichoo, Is Pyar Se, Yeh Hai Pyaar Pyaar etc. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik rendered this beautiful composition penned by Anand Bakshi, and the romantic song was filmed on Urmila and Shah Rukh Khan, one of the early releases of Khan.

3. Tere Dar Par Sanam from Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi (1993) – Year 1993 remained a career defining year of Anu Malik, who has been waiting for more than a decade for a real break. He gave some of the finest compositions of 1990s in the year 1993, with chartbuster songs belonging to romantic, ghazal, dance number etc trying with every genres of film music, and cemented his position in the industry. There was no turning back after that. Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee, Baazigar, Jaanam etc turned to be big hits, and he received his first Filmfare award same year. Songs of Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee and Baazigar topped all music charts too.

Tere Dar Par Sanam – definitely a career defining songs of Anu Malik is still regarded as one among his best 10 soft melodious compositions, and it gained a lot of popularity when got released. This particular song has two solo versions, one recorded in Kumar Sanu’s voice and second one in Sadhana Sargam’s voice. Qateel Shifai penned the lyrics and the female solo featured Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Roy. The male version featured Pooja Bedi aside Rahul Roy. However the song drew inspirations from the theme track of 1971 movie ‘Summer of 42’, composed by Michel Legrand.

4. Badalon Mein Chup Raha Hai from Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi (1993) – The movie also featured a romantic duet by the lead pair, sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. Qateel Shifai penned the lyrics. The composer extensively used the voices of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik to record the songs of 1990s, and the duo remained the most sought voices of the decade too.

5. Baazigar O Baazigar from Baazigar (1993) – Baazigar was the first major hit of Anu Malik’s career, and it played a magnificent role in establishing the careers of both Kajol and SRK, who went on to become the most sought screen pair of Bollywood screen. All its songs were extremely melodious and huge blockbusters too. Anu Malik received his first Filmfare award for best compositions of Baazigar, and both the singers – Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik received nomination for this particular song too. Nawab Arzoo penned the lyrics of this title track, and song featured SRK and Kajol. It can be said that it’s the first romantic duet filmed on this popular onscreen pair. Also read: Top 10 songs of SRK-Kajol combination.

6. Yeh Kaali Kaali from Baazigar (1993) – This dance number featuring SRK and Kajol was a huge chartbuster, and its dance sequence also got noticed. Kumar Sanu received two Filmfare nominations for this movie, and earned it for this one. Anu Malik also provided the back vocals. Its lyrics were penned by Dev Kohli. This song is inspired from ‘The Man Who Plays The Mandolino’ by Dean Martin and ‘Because of You’ by Cover Girls. Shah Rukh’s costume for the song was designed by his wife Gauri Khan.

7. Chupana Bhi from Baazigar (1993) – Though this song featured Kajol and Shah Rukh, it’s better known to be Siddharth Ray’s song. It can be tagged under a ghazal, and people still love it for its amazing lyrics penned by Dev Kohli. The song had two renditions – one by Pankaj Udhas and second by Vinod Rathod. The track sung by Udhas was not included in the film.

8. E Mere Humsafar from Baazigar (1993) – The movie included two duets featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Shilpa Shetty, and this one is my favourite. This sizzling song was sung by Vinod Rathod and Alka Yagnik, and penned by Dev Kohli. The second one – Kitabein Bahut Se, sung by Vinod Rathod and Asha Bhosle too was popular. The Mukda of E Mere Humsafar is very much inspired from Kishore Kumar’s popular song, Khoobsurat Haseena from Mr. X in Bombay.

9. Aaj Humein Maloom Hua from Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1994) – Kumar Sanu and Kavita Krishnamurthy rendered their voices for the beautiful song penned by Nawab Arzoo. Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar who played siblings in their most memorable movie, Masoom (1983) played a romantic pair in this song.

10. Is Tarah Aashiqui Ka from Imtihaan (1994) – The movie inspired from Humraaz of 1960s has some melodious compositions too. Is Tarah Aashiqui Ka is the most popular song with two male versions, in Amit Kumar and Kumar Sanu’s voices. Kumar Sanu’s version was immensely popular. The song was filmed two times in the movie – first time with Sunny Deol and second time with Saif Ali Khan. Raveena Tandon was featured in both versions. The song was loosely inspired from the oldie classic ‘Autumn Leaves’. Faiz Anwar wrote the lyrics.

11. Churake Dil Mera from Mein Khiladi Mein Anari (1994) – One of the finest romantic tunes ever composed by the composer, the song was beautifully filmed on Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty. Anu Malik earned a Filmfare nomination for its compositions, and Rani Malik penned the lyrics. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik provided the voices.

12. Roop Suhana Lagta Hain from The Gentleman (1994) The movie is a remake of Tamil film with the same time, and so are a few songs too. After Roja, Gentleman (1993) was the most successful music album of A. R. Rahman. Roop Suhana Lagta Hain is a direct lift of the wedding song “Ottagathai Kattiko” featuring Madhoo & Arjun, apart from two more songs featured in the original. Juhi Chawla and Chiranjeevi were featured in the Hindi version of the same song sung by S. P. B and Chithra. The song was originally inspired from the Kannada album song “Eddem Ante Teddam Antav” sung by Malgudi Subha in 1990. Actually Rahman while serving as an arranger with the composers Raj-Koti helped them in composing the original song. Indeewar penned its Hindi lyrics.

13. Ruk Ruk Ruk from Vijaypath (1994) – Alisha Chinoy’s sexy voice is mostly associated with dance numbers, item songs and sizzling tracks, and she exclusively worked with Anu Malik in the 1990s though she remained a seasonal playback singer. Though she owns many chartbusters composed by Anu Malik, I included only two songs in this list. Scroll towards the end to know the second song which made into the list. She also bagged a Filmfare nomination for the song, filmed on Tabu and Ajay Devgan. Shyam Anuragi wrote the lyrics.

14. Raah Mein Unse from Vijaypath (1994) – This romantic duet sung by Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu is my top pick from the album. Alka bagged a Filmfare nomination for its rendering. Filmed on Tabu and Ajay Devgan, Zameer Kazmi wrote the lyrics.

15. Sambhala Hai Maine from Naaraaz (1994) – This intense romantic track resembles Anu Malik’s Tere Dar Par Sanam somewhere, may be in music arrangement or rendering by Kumar Sanu. Both the songs are filmed almost the same way, the most beautiful and breath taking moments just before the expression of love, and the process to hide the true feelings. Interestingly Qateel Shifai penned its beautiful lyrics too. The song featured Sonali Bandre and Atul Agnihotri. The tune of opening lines of Antara are quite similar to Churake Dil Mera song composed by Anu Malik same year.

16. Jaane Mujhe Kya Hua from Baazi (1995) Fur Elise of Beethoven – his masterpiece work has been used multiple times on Indian screen, and this is one such beautiful instance. Anu Malik gave a Bollywood touch to the composition, and made it true desi. The song sung by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam was extremely popular too. Majrooh Sultanpuri and Anwar Sagar penned the lyrics of its songs. The movie also included yet another copied tune – Dole Dole Dil Dole inspired from Come September – Billy Vaughn (1961). Interestingly the same tune was used to recreate the title track of Madhuri Dixit starrer Raja, released the same year.

17. Dheere Dheere Aap Mere from Baazi (1995) – The movie included 4 duets of Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam, featuring the lead pair, Aamir Khan and Mamta Kulkarni – Dheere Dheere Aap Mere, Jaane Mujhe Kya Hua, Na Jaane Kya Ho Gaya Hai and Maine Kaha Mohataram. Maine Kaha Mohataram went unnoticed, while the rest three duets became instant hits.

18. Raja Ko Rani Se from Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) – The romantic songs of Akele Hum Akele Tum were huge chartbusters and immensely popular still now, and Anu Malik earned a nomination at Filmfare awards. Yet most of the compositions were either copied or inspired, which brought a black mark to the composer’s career. All its romantic tracks featured the lead pair Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, but composed in different moods well suiting the film script. All the songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. This particular song is a romantic duet by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik and both earned a Filmfare nomination each. The song also had a less-known Kumar Sanu – Alka Yagnik version. This particular track was inspired from Slash – Godfather Theme.

19. Dil Mera Churaya Kyon from Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) – Yet another finest composition, but once again a copycat! Its lyrics too were not original. Its tune is inspired from Wham! – Last Christmas by George Michael (1984). Dil Mera Churaya Kyon was recorded in Kumar Sanu’s voice.

20. Aisa Zakhm Diya Hai from Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) – This party number sung by Udit Narayan featured the lead pair on a eve of New Year celebrations, and is extremely romantic too. The song was quite popular when it got released. This song too was not an original one, and its original version is Sweet Child in Time (1970) composed by Deep Purple.

22. Palkein Ho Khuli Ya Bandh from Takkar (1995) – This soft number sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik is my top favorite song from the album, though Aankhon Mein Baso Ho was the biggest chartbuster. The song featuring Suniel Shetty and Sonali Bendre was penned by Rani Malik.

23. Aankhon Mein Baso Ho from Takkar (1995) – One of the biggest chartbuster songs of 1990s, the song featuring Suniel Shetty and Sonali Bendre was penned by Maya Govind. Anu Malik recorded this song in the voice of Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Alka Yagnik.

24. Mera Piya Ghar Aaya from Yarana (1995)The song is quite popular for the unique dance steps done by Madhuri Dixit, and Kavita Krishnamurthy earned Filmfare award for its rendition. Maya Govind penned the lyrics. The tune and lyrics were copied from Nasrat Fateh Ali Khan’s version, which created controversies. It was not for the first time Anu Malik copied the legendary singer’s work.

25. Jhanjariya from Krishna (1996) – The song with a folk touch had two solo versions recorded in the voices of Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik, and both became extremely popular. The male version featuring Suniel Shetty and Karishma Kapoor was one of the most expensive songs of Bollywood in the 1990s with more than 500 dancers, while the female version was a dance version featuring Karishma Kapoor. Anand Raaj Anand wrote separate lyrics for both versions.

26. Ho Nahi Sakta from Diljale (1996) – Udit Narayan sang this popular solo filmed on Ajay Devgan and Sonali Bandre. Javed Akhtar penned the lyrics. Kumar Sanu’s solo, Soch Raha Hoon Kisse Poochoo was equally popular.

27. Yeh Kya Hua from Tamanna (1997) – Rahat Indori penned the lyrics of this beautiful duet filmed on Pooja Bhatt and Sharat Kapoor which expressed love at its best. Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik did the playback singing.

28. Hameshaa Hameshaa from Hameshaa (1997) – All the songs were instant chartbusters. Yet I was forced to exclude some of the popular songs like Neela Dupatta, Dil Tujhpe Fida and Nazrein to complete this 100-song list, mostly featuring the lead pair Kajol & Saif Ali Khan. Rahot Indori wrote the lyrics of this romantic duet sung by Kumar Sanu & Sadhana Sargam.

29. Har Ek Muskurahat from Ankhon Mein Tum Ho (1997) – Its title track sung by Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik is a beautiful song. Yet I chose this touching song sung by Alka Yagnik. Its meaningful lyrics written by Anand Bakshi make it an extraordinary song. The song was filmed on Rakhee Gulzar, Suman Ranganathan and Sharad Kapoor.

30. Tan Tana Tan Tan Tan Tara from Judwaa (1997) – David Dhawan frequently used Anu Malik’s tune for his masala entertainers, and remained successful most of the time. All the fast tracks of the movie were huge chartbusters, and some of its compositions were reused for its sequel released in 2018 starring David Dhawan’s son. East or West, Oonchi Hai Building and Tu Mere Dil Mein Bas Jaa too were huge hits. This song was rendered by composer himself, and its peppy lyrics were provided by Sameer.

31. Akela Hai Mr Khiladi from Mr & Mrs. Khiladi (1997) – The title track featuring Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla was sung by Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal. Lyrics were written by Dev Kohli. The song got noticed for its foreign locations, and the album also included popular peppy tracks like Samose Mein Aloo, Jara Parde Peh Ane De etc and many more hit songs.

32. Sandese Aate Hain from Border (1997) – A song dedicated to the soldiers, the song released during the occasion of golden jubilee independence day celebrations was a very huge chartbuster when got released, and its compositions earned Anu Malik a Filmfare nomination too. The song looks a ‘typical desi composition’ and became an anthem for Indian soldiers soon after release. The song sung by Roop Kumar Rathod and Sonu Nigam earned a Filmfare nomination while lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar won both National award and Filmfare awards for its meaningful lines. E Jaate Hue Lamhon, Hume Jabse Mohabbat and Mere Dushman Mere Bhai are other popular songs.

34. Payali Chunmun from Virasat (1997) – The song gave K. S. Chithra the first and only National award for a Hindi song. She also received her first Filmfare nomination for this song. The song is originally a reused version from the original Tamil film, composed by Illayaraja. Click here to read about a few more interesting facts of this song. Chithra and Kumar Sanu rendered their voices for Tabu and Anil Kapoor, while Javed Akhtar penned lyrics for all the 7 tracks of the album.

Kavita Krishnamurthy earned numerous nominations for its rendition and won Filmfare awards. Udit Narayan proved the male vocals.

37. Neend Churai Meri from Ishq (1997) – All the songs from the album were chartbusters. But I had to pick just two of them, so that I can include more films in this list. This song is not an original one, but inspired from Sending All My Love by Linera. The song featuring Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol was sung by Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik & Kavita Krishnamurthy, and lyrics penned by Rahat Indori.

38. Dekho Dekho Jaanam from Ishq (1997) – The romantic song featuring real life couple, Ajay Devgan and Kajol was a hit. Rahat Indori penned the lyrics of this one too. Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik were the voices behind this sweet track.

39. Khatey Hain Kasam from Prem Aggan (1998) – Some of the finest songs of Sadhana Sargam’s career were composed by Anu Malik, and Khatey Hain Kasam is one such. She sang this popular duet with Udit Narayan, and the song was filmed on Fardeen Khan and Meghna Kothari. Sudarshan Faakir penned its lyrics. 40. Chori Chori Jab Nazrein Mili from Kareeb (1998) – The composer was quite active in the second half of 1990s, and his fast tracks were high in demand. Yet he composed soft melodies exclusively for a few albums during this period, and music track of Kareeb is not an exception. Anu also introduced a new playback singer with a distinct voice, Sanjeevani who sang all the female tracks of the album, including this duet aside Kumar Sanu. Her innocent voice well suited the newcomer Neha too, who was paired with Bobby Deol. Sanjeevani bagged her first Filmfare nomination too. Rahat Indori penned all the lyrics of the album.

41. Haan Judai Se Darta Hai Dil from Kareeb (1998) – It’s the single sad duet among three, sung by Kumar Sanu & Sanjeevani, and was filmed on lead pair.

42. Chura Lo Na Dil Mera from Kareeb (1998) – This lovely pictured song was uniquely tuned too. The distinct voice of Sanjeevani also makes it special. Kumar Sanu sang this duet with Sanjeevani, and the song was filmed on Bobby Deol and Neha.

43. Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam from Duplicate (1998) – The dance number featuring Shah Rukh Khan and the leading ladies – Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bandre, was sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. Kathai Aankhon Waali and Ek Shararat too were popular.

Sameer penned its popular lyrics. Alka received a Filmfare nomination for this song.

45. Soldier Soldier from Soldier (1998) Soldier is regarded as one of the finest works of Anu Malik’s musical journey, and almost all songs are exceptionally well. He also earned a Filmfare nomination for its compositions. It was not an easy task for me also to choose songs from this movie for the list, and I had to exclude Meri Saanson Mein Samaye and Mehfil Mein Baar Baar from this list, to make space for other songs. Yet in my opinion, these two songs equal to other chosen songs in terms of quality. All these songs were filmed on Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol, and lyrics were well-written by Sameer. The title track was sung by Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik.

46. Mere Rang Balle Balle from Soldier (1998) – This dance number is quite different from other tunes, and owns a Punjabi touch. Sonu Nigam & Jaspinder Narula rendered their voices.

48. Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aye from Soldier (1998) – The female version featuring Preity Zinta was sung by Alka Yagnik, while the male version, Meri Saanson Mein Samaye by Sonu Nigam, and it’s not easy to interpret which one is the best.

49. Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain from Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999) – All the songs were well received and I picked three out of 8 tracks, all filmed on Anil Kapoor and Kajol. Zara Aankhon Mein is yet another popular duet from the movie. The title track was sung by Kumar Sanu & Anuradha Paudwal. All the songs were penned by Sameer.

50. Chhup Gaya from Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999) – Kumar Sanu & Anuradha Paudwal sang three duets from the film, while this song was recorded in the voices of Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik.

51. Kasam Se Kasam Se from Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999) – As told above, the song featuring Anil Kapoor and Kajol was sung by Kumar Sanu & Anuradha Paudwal. The song also featured the playback singers performing on stage.

52. Hum To Deewane Hue Yaar from Badshaah (1999) – The movie starring Shah Rukh Khan and Twinkle Khanna included a few popular duets, and this one is my pick from the album. Abhijeet & Alka Yagnik sang this duet penned by Sameer.

53. What Is Mobile Number from Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999) – The peppy songs from the album well-suited the funny mood of the film. Songs of Biwi No: 1, released one month ago too was treated the same way, and Anu Malik earned Filmfare nomination for both movies directed by David Dhawan with Karishma Kapoor playing the female lead. Govinda was featured in this song aside Karishma, and at the time when Sameer penned the lyrics, mobile phones have just come into scene, but ‘not reachable’ for common man’s pockets to buy or pay its bills. The song was sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik. “I Love You Bol Daal” is yet another peppy number featuring the same pair aside Sanjay Dutt, who played parallel lead in the film.

54. Jungle Hai Aadhi Raat from Biwi No: 1 (1999) – The album featured many peppy numbers like Chunari Chunari and Ishq Chandi Hai, yet Jungle Hai Aadhi Raat is my top pick. The song was filmed on Karishma Kapoor and Salman Khan, and lyrics penned by Sameer. Kumar Sanu & Hema Sardesai provided the voices.

55. Had Se Jyaada Aati Hai from Chehra (1999) – The romantic duet of Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik featuring Madhoo and Ayub Khan was extremely popular, though the movie was a flop. Lyrics were penned by Samir.

56. Sab Ke Baaratein from Jaanam Samjha Karo (1999) – The movie included many fast and dance numbers like Jaanam Samjha Karo. Yet this soft number featuring Urmila Matondkar is my favourite. The song had two solo female versions sung by Alka Yagnik and Jaspinder Narula respectively. Jaspinder’s version was extremely popular. Lyrics were authored by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Chandini & Love Hua are other popular tracks.

57. Saajan Saajan from Arzoo (1999) – The song featuring Madhuri Dixit and Saif Ali Khan was sung by Alka Yagnik, and all the songs were written by Anand Bakshi.

59. Mela Dilon Ka from Mela (2000) – The songs of Mela were composed by Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan and Lesle Lewis. Yet songs of Anu Malik stood among the best. Apart from the title track and Dil Mera Akela, the track, Tujhe Rab Ne Banaya (Tujhe Dil Pukare) also remains memorable. The title track had two versions, and the solo sung by Alka Yagnik became extremely popular. Dev Kohli and Dharmesh Darshan wrote different versions.

60. Dil Mera Akela from Mela (2000) – The song featured Aamir Khan and Twinkle Khanna, and it was sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. Sameer penned the lyrics.

mela 2000

61. Mere Humsafar from Refugee (2000) – The film compositions gave Anu Malik his first National award, and also a special mention at Filmfare. All the songs, mostly recorded in Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik’s voice were extremely popular, and this one too. The song featured Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor in a romantic mood, and Refugee was the debut of both these actors too. Javed Akhtar penned the lyrics of all its songs, including this one.

Mere Humsafar is definitely one of the finest compositions of Anu Malik’s career, but not a fresh tune. Its mukda is loosely inspired from Main Tumhari Ragini Tum Geet Ho from Roop Sundari composed by his father Sardar Malik, who also remained a successful composer in the Bollywood yesterdays.

62. Panchi Nadiya Pawan Ke from Refugee (2000) – The song gave National awards for both its composer and lyricist. Javed Akhtar also earned Filmfare awards for the year for this song for best lyrics, while its playback singers – Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam received a nomination each. The movie included some of the finest duets of the duo including Mere Humsafar, Aisa Lagta Hai and Taal Pe Jab after which they went on to become the top singing pair for duets in Hindi cinema. Aisa Lagta Hai is one of my favourite tunes always, but just excluded in this list of 100 best songs to give space for other songs. But in my list of top Alka Yagnik – Sonu Nigam duets, I included this particular song after excluding a few others.

63. Taal Pe Jab from Refugee (2000) – This duet sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam, featuring the lead pair can also never miss this list. In fact, Refugee will always remain a milestone work of Anu Malik’s career. After year 1993, he received a few setbacks in the mid-1990s for his ‘inspired tunes’, and year 2000 brought him back to track with a string of fresh and finest tunes for the movies such as Refugee, Josh (with a few inspirations from western tunes), Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Badal, Mela and Fiza. After 1993, year 2000 noticed his career peak point, bagging a National award apart from music critics’ praises too, for composing fresh tunes. He also bagged three out of 6 Filmfare award nominations for the year 2000, though he couldn’t win it. Yet he was given a special award for the compositions of Refugee.

64. Hai Mera Dil from Josh (2000) – My top pick of the album, the romantic song featuring Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh was penned by Sameer and sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. Alka received a Filmfare nomination for its rendering. The song has drawn inspirations from Gypsy Kings’ Djobi Djoba and Brian Hyland’s ‘Sealed with a kiss’, though he has made the song his own.

65. Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika from Josh (2000) – This solo track sung by Abhijeet is one of the finest songs of his career. The song featuring Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh was penned by Sameer, who penned all its soft tracks while the peppy numbers were penned by Nitin Raikwar.

66. Haare Haare from Josh (2000) – The movie included three songs featuring Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh, but filmed in different moods. This sad song was sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, and lyrics written by Sameer.  Anu Malik definitely took inspirations from Vangelis’ ‘Conquest of paradise’. The album also included the song, Apun Bola, the first time when Shah Rukh Khan played the role of a playback singer.

67. Tu Hawa Hai from Fiza (2000) – This soft romantic track sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik was filmed on Karishma Kapoor and Bikram Saluja. Sonu Nigam earned a Filmfare nomination for best playback singer (male) while Anu Malik also earned a nomination for its music. It was year 2000 which began the successful collaboration of Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik for romantic duets, which continued for a few more years, and Anu Malik also played a magnificent role in it. Gulzar penned the lyrics for this particular song.

68. Aaja Mahiya from Fiza (2000) – This particular romantic duet sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik is my top pick from the album. The song featured Neha aside Hrithik Roshan, and was well appreciated for its tune as well as dance steps. When the song was pictured, Hrithik was only a newcomer whose Kaho Na Pyar Hai was yet to release, and when this particular song got released, the person who got thrilled most was none other than Neha, who was only a few films old in Bollywood. Hrithik was already a big star when Aaja Mahiya got released. Gulzar got nominated in Filmfare awards for best lyrics.

hrithik fiza

69. Mehboob Mere from Fiza (2000) – This item number featuring Sushmita Sen was the USP of the album, and the song also featured Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, who played siblings in this movie. When the movie was initially scripted, Hrithik had only a brief role. When his star status increased soon after the release of his debut flick, Kaho Na Pyar Hai released the same year, the filmmakers were pressurized by distributors to add more scenes of Hrithik and a couple of songs too, to attract the audience. Sunidhi Chauhan earned a Filmfare nomination for its rendition.

The song was penned by Tejpal Kaur, a less-heard name in Bollywood – a lyricist and actress who penned lyrics for movies such as Chor Machaya Shor, Janasheen etc. She acted in a couple of TV serials too, before she passed away in 2009 aged only 47.

70. Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega from Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000) – All the songs from the movie were huge chartbusters, and I picked two of my favourites, soft melodies. Songs like Piya Piya, Dil Dil, Ek Garam Chai Ki Pyali Ho and Aisa Pehli Baar Hua Hai too were loved by Anu Malik fans. The title track featuring Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji was written by Sameer and sung by Alka Yagnik & Udit Narayan.

71. Aate Jaate Jo Milta Hai from Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000) – This Alka Yagnik – Sonu Nigam duet is indeed very lovely. The song was filmed on Preity Zinta and Salman Khan, and written by Sameer.

72. Milne Se Darta Hai Dil from Badal (2000) – This romantic duet sung by Kavita Krishnamurty and Sonu Nigam is indeed amazing. The song was filmed on Rani Mukerji and Bobby Deol, and lyrics were provided by Sameer. The movie also featured one dance number, Tujhe Dekh Ke Dil featuring the lead pair, which make us remember ‘Nayyo Nayyo’ song composed by Anu Malik for Soldier. Jaspinder Narula provided the female voice for both. The song – Jugni Jugni was also popular.

73. Saajan Ke Ghar Jana Hai from Lajja (2001) – This women-centric film starred some lead actresses of 1990s, and some beautiful songs in female voices. This dance number was sung by Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Richa Sharma, and pictured on Sonali Bandre who made a special appearance for this wedding song. Sameer penned the lyrics. Badi Mushkil and Aaye Aajaye Aa Hi Jaiye are other popular female solos from the album.

74. Meri Zindagi Mein Ajnabee from Ajnabee (2001) – One of the earliest romantic tracks sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, she sang this duet aside Kumar Sanu. All the lyrics of the movie are penned by Sameer, and this particular romantic track was picturized on Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor.

75. Mehbooba Mehbooba from Ajnabee (2001) – This dance number was a huge chartbuster when got released. Akshay Kumar and Bipasha Basu lip-synched to the voices of Adnan Sami & Sunidhi Chauhan, and Bobby Deol is also seen in this song at film’s climax. Adnan Sami earned a Filmfare nomination.

76. Rabba Mere Rabba from Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai (2001) – This particular song sung by Sonu Nigam is my top pick from the album, and my personal favourite too. The song featuring Tusshar Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor was lovely filmed. All the songs were written by Sameer, and turned huge hits too. Anu Malik received a Filmfare nomination for the music album. Just I happened to hear a Tamil song, Thaneerai Kaadhalikum from Romeo (Tamil) composed by Rahman in 1996. I got one intro tune from that song copied as such for Rabba Mere Rabba song. In both songs this particular tune with similar music arrangements appears just before the start of Antaras (before 1st Antara in Hindi version and before 2nd Antara in Tamil version).

77. Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai from Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai (2001) – KK sang this heartbreaking song featuring Tusshar Kapoor. A very interesting fact to add! Since Kareena’s debut film Refugee in 2000, Anu Malik composed songs of 5 Kareena movies in a row, and all her movies released in 2000 & 2001, except Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. The other movies are Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, Yadein, Ajnabee and Asoka. In 2003 also, Anu Malik composed three of her films in a row – Khushi, Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and LOC Kargil. Isn’t it a strange co-incidence? He recorded maximum songs in Alka Yagnik’s voice, followed by Chithra and others.

78. Yadein from Yadein (2001) – The movie flopped at box office. However its songs turned memorable. The title track featuring Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan was sung by Hariharan. All its songs were penned by Anand Bakshi.

79. Chanda Tare from Yadein (2001) – Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sukhwinder Singh rendered their voices for Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan in this sad song. It’s one of the rarest songs sung by Sukhwinder Singh for Anu Malik.

80. Eli Re Eli from Yadein (2001) – The sizzling song featuring Kareena Kapoor and siblings became a rage when got released. The song also featured Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Hema Sardesai & Kavita Krishnamurty rendered their voices for the song, while Kavita Krishnamurthy’s voice was noticed most. The movie also included popular tracks like Jab Dil Mile, Aye Dil Dil Ki Duniya and Chamakti Shaam Hai.

81. Raat Ka Nasha from Asoka (2001) Raat Ka Nasha is one of the finest Bollywood songs sung by south Indian Nightingale – Chithra. The song was so popular that Anu Malik later used Chithra’s voice to record a series of songs for Kareena in Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, and the songs turned to be huge chartbusters too. Except San Sanana song, all the songs were penned by Gulzar.

82. San Sanana from Asoka (2001) – The only song from the album penned by Anand Bakshi, it was one of his last works before he passed away a few months later in 2002. He worked in 26 films with Anu Malik. The sizzling track was filmed on Kareena Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan. Alka Yagnik who was the leading voice of the song received a Filmfare nomination, and back vocals were provided by Hema Sardesai.

83. Roshini Se from Asoka (2001) – This sizzling track featuring Kareena Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan is highly romantic too. Alka Yagnik & Abhijeet Bhattacharya rendered their voices for this track.

84. Chori Chori from Om Jai Jagadish (2002) – The romantic song featured Abhishek Sharma and Tara Sharma. Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam and Kunal Ganjawala rendered their voices while Sameer penned its lyrics.

85. Teri Zindagi Mein Pyar Hai from Badhaai Ho Badhaai (2002) – The song was sung by KK & Alka Yagnik, and written by Javed Akhtar. The song was filmed on Keerti Reddy & Anil Kapoor.

86. Raag Banke from Badhaai Ho Badhaai (2002) – The song featuring Anil Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty was sung by Alka Yagnik & Shaan, a wonderful rendition. Lyrics were written by Javed Akhtar.

87. Kasam Ki Kasam from Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003) – It was for the first time south Indian singer Chithra sang huge number of tracks for a Hindi album, where Anu Malik recorded 8 out of 11 tracks in her voice. The singer had earlier worked with the composer for the movie Asoka, where her voice was used to record one of the top tracks for Kareena Kapoor. ‘Raat Ka Nasha’ became a huge hit, and hence Anu Malik repeated the same voice for all songs of Kareena in the movie, Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. It proved successful too. The beautiful lyrics penned by Dev Kohli became the highlight of the song, and got well noticed. The song featured all the lead actors – Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan, and Shaan sang this beautiful duet with Chithra.

chitra hindi hits

88. Prem Meri Aankhon Mein Hai from Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003) – This dance number featuring the lead actors too became immensely popular. The solo track sung by Chithra was penned by Dev Kohli. The movie also included popular tracks like Tere Zindagi Mein Chali Aayi, Sanjana I Love You, O Ajnabi etc.

89. Chan Chan from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S (2003) – Vinod Rathod and Shreya Ghoshal’s voice were used to record this romantic duet featuring Sanjay Dutt and Gracy Singh. Rahat Indori wrote the song.

90. Aye Meri Zindagi from Saaya (2003) – The song had solo versions recorded in Shreya Ghoshal and Udit Narayan’s voice, and was filmed on John Abraham and Tara Sharma. Saeed Quadri, who regularly worked with Anu Malik penned its lyrics too.

91. Mein Hoon Na from Mein Hoon Na (2004) – Anu Malik earned his second Filmfare award for best music for the songs of Mein Hoon Na, and its title track sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal is a finest tune indeed. The composer truly deserves accolades for the compositions of the album. The song featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Amrita Rao and Zayed Khan was penned by Javed Akhtar, who wrote all the songs.

92. Tumse Milke from Mein Hoon Na (2004) – The song with qawwali shades is my top pick from the album, and Sonu Nigam sang it amazingly. Read: Top 20 songs of Sonu Nigam. This dance number featured Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Amrita Rao and Zayed Khan, with a group of singers and dancers. Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha and Chali Jaisi Hawayein are other popular tracks.

93. Kaho Na Kaho from Murder (2004) – The movie starring Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat became one of the biggest grossers of the year, owing to its bold content, and its sizzling tracks composed by Anu Malik played an important role too. He received a Filmfare nomination for its compositions. This particular song featuring Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat was penned by Sayeed Quadri, and sung by Pakistani singer Amir Jamal, a less-heard name in Bollywood.

94. Bheege Hont Tere from Murder (2004) – The top sizzling track of the album, Kunal Ganjawala earned his single Filmfare award for best playback singer for this song. The song filmed on Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat is known for its erotic scenes. Sayeed Quadri wrote the song. The movie also included a popular song, Dil Ko Hazar Bar Roka.

95. Agar Tum Mil Jaayo from Zeher (2005) – The album consists of tracks composed by different composers, and Anu Malik composed 2 of its tracks. Agar Tum Mil Jaayo is the top romantic song of the album recorded in two solo versions – one in Shreya Ghoshal’s voice and second one in Udit Narayan’s. It can’t be quoted to be an original song, as both its lyrics and tune were copied from a song from 1974 Pakistani Urdu movie, Imandar rendered by Tassawar Khanum. Mukda of the song is a direct lift, both lyrics and tune. Sayeed Quadri re-wrote the Antara of the song, while he didn’t alter the Mukda.

96. Sau Dard from Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – This love triangle featuring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan was a box office flop. Yet the songs got noticed. This sad song featuring Salman Khan is my top pick. Sonu Nigam rendered his voice, and Gulzar penned the lyrics. Suzanne D Mello provided the back vocals.

salman khan hits

97. Salaam Salaam from Umrao Jaan (2006) – Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan were featured in this melodious song sung by Alka Yagnik. Javed Akhtar penned the lyrics. The movie also included some of the memorable tracks like Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Na Kijo.

98. Bebo Mein Bebo from Kambakkht Ishq (2009) – Songs of Kambakkht Ishq are among the last major hits of Anu Malik, and it happened one decade back. The songs are indeed vibrant and lovely, which typically fall into Anu Malik’s signature style. The song is also the signature style singing of Alisha Chinoi who sang this sizzling track, filmed on Bebo and Akshay Kumar. Anvita Dutt Guptan wrote this song specially for Kareena, who owns the pet name ‘Bebo’.

99. Kyon Phoolon Se from Kambakkht Ishq (2009) – My top pick from the album is the soft track – Kyun Phoolom Si rendered by Shaan & Shreya Ghoshal filmed on Akshay and Kareena. It’s hard to imagine the swing of Anu Malik songs to both extremes, from soft numbers to fast track numbers, all included in a single album and Kyon Phoolon Se is the best instance that he is a master of true melodies as well. Anvita Dutt Guptan wrote this song as well. Also read: Top songs of Kareena Kapoor.

100. Moh Moh Ke Dhage from Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) – After mid-2000s, Anu Malik’s career faced a slow decline when many new composers came on stage. Dum Laga Ke Haisha remains one such album which brought back some reminiscences of the glorious years of the composer, and Kumar Sanu & Sadhana Sargam’s voice too, after a long time. The song had two renditions in Papon and Monali Thakur’s voice, and the female singer won both National awards and Filmfare for her lovely rendition. Varun Grover penned the lyrics.

Sadly, Dum Laga Ke Haisha & Kambakkht Ishq are the only albums featured in the list of Anu Malik hits, in the last one decade of his musical journey, and my list concludes with Moh Moh Ke Dhage featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar. The song also bagged him Zee Cine Award for Best Music Director, an award received after a long time. Most recently in 2017, some of his songs of Judwaa have been revived and reprised for the sequel of the same film. Hope we get an opportunity to hear Anu Malik returns with a surprise album with some beautiful songs, and they turn instant chartbusters. All the very best Anu Malik Ji.
