Writer Amit Varma who won Bastiat Prize for Journalism in 2007

Amit Varma is an Indian writer based in Mumbai. He has also been associated with advertising, television and journalism fields prior to his writing career. Varma won the 2007 Bastiat Prize for Journalism and many more honours related to the field of journalism and media, and in 2009 his named was included in India’s 50 Most Powerful People 2009 list by BusinessWeek magazine. His first novel, My friend, Sancho was published in 2008, which was nominated to the longlist for the Man Asian Literary Prize 2008.

He is a blogger turned journalist who started blogging in 2004 with his blog, India Uncut, through which he commented on general issues, and very soon his blog turned popular. He worked as a freelancer columnist and journalist, before he published his first novel, My friend, Sancho. His first stint as a journalist happened in 2001 when he worked with Wisden (Cricketers’ Almanack).

1. Though Amit Varma is best known as a journalist, writing novels has been his true desire.

2. He wrote columns for – The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal and Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, and also served as an editor and consultant for Cricinfo India.

3. At the age of 10, his favourite writer was Dostoevsky, and also read all of Shakespeare at that age. Titus Andronicus is his most favourite Shakespeare play.
