Alka Yagnik sang for Bhansali’s debut film
It’s true, Baahon Ki Darmiyaan is the only song sung by Alka Yagnik in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut film, Khamoshi: The Musical. It’s a popular duet, Alka sung with Hariharan, and still regarded as one of the top romantic songs of 1990s. All the songs of the film composed by Jatin-Lalit were well received, though the movie fell flat in terms of box office collection. Baahon Ki Darmiyaan featured Manisha Koirala and Salman Khan, and lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Chand Chupa Badal Mein fetched Alka a Filmfare nomination
Similar to Sanjay’s debut film, Alka was offered a single song in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam – Chand Chupa Badal Mein and the lion share went to her arch rival Kavita Krishnamurty. This one too was a duet song, and Alka sung it aside Udit Narayan. Music was composed by debut composer Ismail Darbar and lyrics penned by Mehmood. She gave full life to this highly romantic song featuring Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan.
She sang for the third and final time in Saawariya in 2007
Similar to previous two works, Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered a single track to Alka Yagnik in Saawariya. This time it’s a solo dance number featuring Rani Mukerji who played a prostitute in this film. Chail Chhabeela song composed by Monty Sharma was not as popular as her previous songs with Bhansali’s association. Yet the song got noticed. Lyrics for the movie were penned by Sameer, Nusrat Badr and Sandeep Nath.
Till now Alka has sung for Bhansali in three movies, and that too, a single song each. It can be said that the director never used the singer’s voice in a wise manner and it has been a decade since Alka has sung for a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Hope we can see it in the distant future.
